Trail: Woods Lake Loop – Highway 88 – Winnemucca Lake
Trailhead Distance: 4.6 mile loop
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Trailhead elevation: 8200 feet
Highest point: 9400 feet

We drove to Woods Lake day use area and proceeded on the Winnemucca Lake trail. We inadvertently took a trail that loops around Woods Lake (approx. 1 mile), ended up where we started, then proceeded on the intended trail.

The trail guide stated that the trail was easy to moderate due to one steep, rocky section. We found that it was definitely moderate and there were more steep, rocky sections than led to believe.

Winnemucca Lake was 1.6 miles uphill. The trail loop proceeded to Round Top Lake, approximately 1 mile from Winnemucca Lake. Past Round Top Lake, the trail was downhill to Woods Lake.

The weather was sunny and probably in the high 70’s. There were occasional strong gusts of wind. The wild flowers were still out and the views were gorgeous. Along the trail were the following sights: 1) a stone arrastra that was used to crush ore in the early gold mining efforts, 2) ruins of an old mining cabin and a rusted out old truck, and 3) newer mining buildings.

Woods Lake. Yup - we walked all the way around it by mistake. Oh, that's right - we meant to do it!

Here is Round Top Lake. A beautiful small lake.

Winnemucca Lake. Yes, we have been there! But from the other side. We love these hikes and will probably do them again.
