Trail: Calaveras Big Trees SP - South Grove
Distance: 4.7 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Elevation Gain: 450 feet
Highest point: 4850 feet
We are on a trailer trip to Columbia, CA with four other couples from our neighborhood. We took a hike through the South Grove in Calaveras Big Trees State Park with our friends and neighbors Brad and Martha. It was a beautiful fall-like day with temperatures in the mid 60's.
According to the literature, these trees can reach a height of 325 feet and a diameter of 33 feet and are a surviving species from the dinosaur times. Some of the trees are thought to be as much as 2,000 years old.
The hike is interesting in that you can't see the trees for quite some time and they are scattered amongst the other trees. But when you find them, you know they are the "big" trees.

Some of the big trees were hollowed out by fire, but are still alive.
This tree is named the Palace Hotel.

That is where we camped at the first of the summer. Gorgeous place huh? I loved it, it was like a little bit of home.

It was a really beautiful day and we have never been there!! Can you imagine? If Santa Barbara folk can do it, why can't we?
